Fire Island Pines: The Magic of Summer

The boys, the beach, and the blue skies.

If you've never heard of Fire Island then you must get on it.

It's a magical island that requires a train, bus and ferry ride to get to from NYC, but it's beyond worth the trek. Yes, you just want to get there, but there's something exciting about being en route with all your fellow NYers looking to escape the summer heat, and find a slice of paradise just 2 hours away.

The island itself has a few different spots for all walks of life to find what they're looking for, but if you're looking for a more LGBT type of getaway then Cherry Grove or The Pines are where you'll want to be.

To be honest I wasn't the biggest fan of Fire Island Pines as I had only been for the fourth of July the past three years, which is quite a lively and fun experience, but not the most relaxing time to be out on the island. However, after finding myself in The Pines this summer for two off holiday weekends, I truly understand why many men and women speak so fondly of this beach community.

There are no roads, no cars, and everyone is in a bathing suit basically 24/7. It's a place where you can truly let your hair down, and just be authentically yourself without any judgements. It's a place where strangers become friends, love creeps up on you, and the stars put on a show all night.

Simply put, it's a slice of sandy heaven here on earth.

Camping in New Paltz

Nature was calling...again!

When one of your best friends asks if you would like to go camping, you always say yes. It's a time to escape from the congestion, noise, and craziness that is normal day life, and truly just reconnect with nature, your soul, and some good people. Following my own advice, I jumped at the chance to get out of NYC, which has been a common theme recently, to go on a camping adventure in New Paltz, NY.

It's a crunchy college town upstate that has a lot of charm, nature, and randomness to explore. Sunsets, Minnewaska State Park, and a waterfall made our quick 24 hour get away even more lovely. It was such a great feeling to be back in the woods, in my tent, with two of my favorite ladies!

I hope this photo journal sparks something in you to get outside and just breathe in the fresh air!

The Berkshires: Camp Sason

Ever since I've returned from my hike along the PCT, I've felt an extreme yearning to be in nature. I know, shocking. Who would've thought hiking 800 miles would make me want more time in nature?

The thing is, the hike truly puts a lot into perspective, and really makes you consider what is important, and getting out of the fast-paced environment that NYC breeds is feeling more and more paramount when it comes to my priorities. Thus, I've come to the conclusion that this summer I'm going to venture out of the city as much as possible, so that I can fulfill my spirits juxtaposing needs.

This weekend I found myself in the Berkshires, a beautiful rural region in the sprawling mountains of western Massachusetts. It was the perfect 2 day escape to check in with nature, refresh my soul's yearning for being in the elements, and enjoy a lovely group of people. There's something so innocent about being in the woods that I can't help, but feel like I'm in camp, which is exactly what I needed this weekend to be.

Special thanks to Dayna Sason for hosting!

I hope you enjoy!

I’m Going to Walk for 652 Miles in 45 Days

As some of you already know, and as most of you don’t know, starting on May 14, I’m going to hike part of the Pacific Crest Trail with nothing more than a backpack.

652 miles to be exact.

Four years ago, I read a little known book, Wild. You know, the one that has now been made into an epic movie with Reece Witherspoon starring as Cheryl Strayed, a real-life woman, who was looking for clarity and just needed to escape her life.

I instantly related to Strayed’s story, and knew my best friend, Stacie, who I’ve known since the third grade, would as well. Thus, I told her she had to read the book immediately, and let me know what she thought of it.

Well, I can adamantly tell you, we both loved it.

It’s now been four years since we both read Wild, and the time has come for us to escape the comforts of our homes, friends, families, and overall lives to find our own clarity and reflect.

We both have our own things to work through, our own reasons for wanting to recharge, and our own desires to just be away from it all. However, what we share is a bond that brings us back to childhood, and the need to live, not just exist.

Part of me is beyond excited for this adventure, but if I’m being honest, part of me is also really nervous. I know there are numerous things that could go wrong, and reasons why I shouldn’t do this.

Yet, I know I have to do this for all those reasons.

I preach getting outside of your comfort zone, challenging yourself, and living a full life, so I must continue to honor my truth, and hopefully inspire along the way.

In an effort to make this trip be even more about inspiration and raising awareness, I’m going to be raising money for Global Citizen, which looks to “help fight extreme poverty and inequality around the world, and support approaches that will make life more sustainable for people and the planet.”

You can click here to donate to my hike, and help me raise money for causes we all believe in.

I am excited to share this experience with you all, and beyond curious as to how this adventure into wild will change me as a person.

I hope this lights a fire within you to finally do something you’ve dreamed of doing, to follow your own journey, and to live rather than just exist.

Life is too short to not enjoy all the wonders of the world, so join me as I break free of my routine, and write another chapter in my story.
